This is the ninth of eleven observations I shared during my part in the conversation about Pen-to-Publication (see blog entry for 24 February 2012).
My daughter Sofie has 250 actual books. She counted them yesterday when her father asked her to sort through them. Sofie has more books than shelf space, so she needs to clear out some of the books, actually.
Sofie also has an iPad, purchased last summer with her own money. Taking a break from sorting through her real books, she downloaded 25 virtual books (also known as e-books). Many of them are literary classics that are now in the public domain, by authors Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Jules Verne, Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, and Mark Twain.
Sofie’s thrilled with the realistic quality of the iPad’s reading interface. “You can do all the things with these pages that you can do with real pages, except tear one out! I tried!” She enthuses as she shows me all the little gestures she used to “grab” and “turn” the electronic pages.
I laughed and laughed.
“What’s so funny mommy?” she asks.
Just like a real book. Hmmmmmn.
