“High Tech, High Touch”
“High Tech, High Touch”
Mar 2, 2012
This is the first of eleven observations I shared during my part in the conversation about Pen-to-Publication (see blog entry for 24 February 2012).
In 1982, John Naisbitt published the book Megatrends, which examined how technology can be fabulously innovative at the same time it can have devastating consequences. One of the chapters, High Tech, High Touch, was subsequently developed further and published as a follow-up book by Naisbitt in 1999. The gist of what he means by High Tech, High Touch is that as technology (devices, interfaces, media) becomes more and more central to our lives, we’ll look for tactile, visceral experiences to balance the effects.
Naisbitt forecasted a surge in pursuits like sculpting, painting, woodworking, weaving, bread-making, travel, yoga, martial arts, meditation, and in wellness-related professions like massage, kinesiology, chiropracty and therapeutic touch.
