McWade’s Eight
McWade’s Eight
Jul 12, 2010
John McWade is one of my design heroes. He’s the founder and creative director of Before & After Magazine, an ongoing source of great design made simple (not simplistic). In 1985, McWade was involved in the original beta test site for Aldus Pagemaker, BA (Before Adobe). 1985 was a pivotal year for designers and typographers because that’s when desktop publishing became reality. The software and operating platforms weren’t very sophisticated at first, but it was clear that publishing would never be the same. There were lots of publishing professionals who grieved over this digital development. Sound familiar?
But here’s the thing: Good design is still good design. McWade’s good sense about what constitutes good design prevails. I trust his approach and his advice.
His recent blog posting lists eight qualities one should look for when hiring a designer. If you’re a prospective client, read these essentials and learn. If you’re a practicing designer, read them to be reminded.
