She’s Gotta Have It?
She’s Gotta Have It?

Here’s a creative response to the demise of the book: rip out the guts and make a trendy purse! I have *totally* mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, it’s a wonderfully fun application of recycling. My purse-addiction comes second only to my shoe-addiction, and my book addiction trumps them both! And yet, I want one of these purses. But tear up one of my beloved books in order to have one? I think not. On the other hand, picking up a hard cover at a second-hand bookstore . . . now there’s an idea. Which is why this could be a dangerous thing.
Yet I can’t help thinking it’s a lamentable development. What used to be held inside this binding was once valuable and respected. Now, it’s not so sacrosanct. And because the insides of books-on-paper are inevitably headed for the recycling bin (or the collector’s market), this clever woman is taking the lead on keeping some of the raw materials in circulation. Women will always want purses! it’s a pity we can’t say the same thing about books.
Or maybe we can.
